Bob's Almanack

Issue 12

A weekly note from Robert V. Ussley with new essays, cartoons, and brief notes from Outside In Print.

Paperwork cannot repair a car. Its value is keeping a warning alive until it reaches someone who can act.
~ Robert

A bolt punctures a fuel tank. A headline outruns the evidence. A ladder waits beside the garage. A friend waits beside an empty chair. In each case, one person has information or a duty that another person needs. Ford's test reports needed an owner with power to keep the danger away from drivers. A borrowed tool needs a return time. A late arrival needs an update before someone else loses time to the old plan. An incomplete news report needs patience. Facts do no work by themselves. Carry the warning. Return the tool. Give the update. Let the other person decide what comes next.

The Bolt Beside the Gas Tank

Ford's crash tests showed that an exposed bolt could puncture the Pinto's fuel tank before federal rear-impact rules caught up. Ford had the warning. The record must identify who had the authority and duty to keep that danger away from drivers.

The Update

Send the update before the other person's chance to change plans closes. Lost time stays lost, but the notice can prevent another loss.

Return

A borrowed ladder comes with a return job. Set a time, set a route, and put it back before a favor becomes work for the lender.

The Six-Hour News Cycle

Fast headlines fill missing facts with borrowed certainty and leave the anger behind. Wait for the record before repeating the claim.

Read

Silence

Speak when words give someone a fact, a choice, or a finished task. Send the crash report to the person with authority. Update the person waiting. Set a return time for the borrowed tool. The news machine does not need another reflex. Say what assigns the duty or prevents another loss. Leave the rest alone.

Half the Truth is often a great Lie.
~ Poor Richard

The Examiner's Red Pencil

The Examiner's Red Pencil belongs beside the Pinto essay because a warning must name the defect and reach someone who can order a repair before it can protect the public.
