Correct as I Go
I move boldly and change direction as I go.
Some mornings, I picture a river at first light.
The bank behind me sits in deep blue shadow. Ahead, a line of stones crosses the water toward the sun. I can see the next stone clearly. After that, the path bends into mist. I see myself striking out boldly and trusting to Faith.
Part of me wants the whole crossing revealed before I take that first step. I want to know where every stone rests, which ones wobble, and exactly where I will land. I want motion without uncertainty. I want to know…
That’s when I tell myself ~
I am not afraid. Fear is a lie.
I don’t use these words to pretend like I don’t feel anything. I use them to remember who decides what happens next. I am the only person who has authority over me.
Fear has no power over me.
I am courageous and strong!
My courage does not need a grand entrance. It can be quiet and exact. I make the call. I begin the work. I say what I mean. I place one foot on the next stone and the next and the next ~ and I keep going no matter what.
Strength doesn’t mean clinging to my first idea after I see a better way. I don’t prove my resolve by marching in the wrong direction.
I prove it by being present HERE and NOW.
I look. I listen. I learn. I keep moving.
I do not quit.
I act now. I do not delay. I trust my instincts.
Instinct tells me when to act. Attention keeps me balanced and ready.
The next stone may sit farther to the left than I expected. The one beyond it may ask for a shorter step. I adjust my footing and keep on keepin’ not stoppin'.
I move boldly, and I correct as I go.

I move boldly, and I correct as I go.
Bold movement and active adjustment belong together in my life. One gives me motion. The other keeps me headed in the right direction. I can commit without pretending to know everything. I can change course without abandoning myself.
I can’t see all the way across, so I keep my head up and my eyes open. I’m always ready for the bends, and I embrace them when they come. And you can bet that they will come ~
This is how I cross the water.
I choose a direction. I take the best step forward I can. I feel the stone beneath my foot. I raise my eyes and find the next one.
I don’t wait on the other bank for perfect certainty. I don’t mistake delay for wisdom. I don’t wait for the fog to clear.
I don’t need to see all the way across the river!
I trust myself enough to start walking, and I respect myself enough to adjust as I go.
The whole path does not need to appear at once.
The next stone is waiting in the light.
Step out and have FAITH!
