Falling in love.
Falling for scams.
Getting back up
and doing it again.

Both love and a scam can begin with someone telling you what you’ve wanted to hear. You lean in. You believe them. You make plans with something you haven’t yet learned to trust.

Sometimes it holds.

And sometimes you’re sitting at the kitchen table wondering how you missed it.

Life is a controlled fall.

You work your way up. Find a foothold, lose one, climb a little farther. Eventually, you reach a place where you can stand and look around. You begin to think you could stay there.

Then the avalanche.

A quick ride to the bottom. All that climbing, and here you are with gravel in your shoes.

A close view of worn boots finding a firm foothold among loose stones in golden light.

The Next Foothold.

You’re allowed to sit for a while. Take your shoes off. Swear. Let somebody help you with the things you can’t carry yet.

The mountain will still be there.

You decide what you can. The weather gets a say. So do your knees.

And when you start walking, you may notice a path you passed on the way up. You were in a hurry then. You had somewhere to be, something to prove. Now you have a reason to see where it goes.

A hike or a slog.
A walk or a drag.

You decide what you can. The weather gets a say. So do your knees.

You put your foot down,
feel for something firm,
and shift your weight.
