In a recent discussion, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, laid out a trajectory that should give every software engineer pause. Just a few years ago, OpenAI’s coding models were equivalent to a mediocre programmer — the millionth best in the world. By September 2024, the release of GPT-4 saw AI coding capabilities rise to the level of the 10,000th best coder. By early 2025, the company’s internal models ranked around 50th. If Altman’s projections hold, by the end of this year, OpenAI will have an AI that surpasses the best human programmer on the planet.

For engineers who once took comfort in the notion that AI would assist rather than replace them, the accelerating progress of AI coding models suggests a different reality. The trajectory is not linear; it’s exponential. And if this pattern holds, it’s not a matter of whether AI will surpass human coders — it’s a question of when, and more importantly, what happens next.

What About AGI?

Some skeptics argue that large language model (LLM) architecture is fundamentally inadequate for achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI). LLMs, they say, are statistical prediction machines, incapable of true reasoning, self-awareness, or autonomous goal-setting. This critique suggests that OpenAI’s coding models, impressive as they may be, will eventually hit a wall — unable to evolve beyond complex pattern recognition into real intelligence.

But this argument misunderstands the goal. OpenAI is not necessarily striving for AGI in the near term; it is developing narrow superintelligence — an AI capable of vastly outperforming humans in specific domains. A superhuman coder does not need AGI to surpass human capabilities; it only needs to excel at coding. The distinction is critical: AGI aims for broad cognitive flexibility, whereas narrow superintelligence optimizes for specialized tasks with unprecedented efficiency.

In fact, the rise of a superhuman coding AI may serve as a precursor to AGI. Once AI reaches the point where it can autonomously improve its own architecture, the self-improvement loop could drive it toward general intelligence. The so-called “singularity” — the moment AI begins recursively enhancing itself beyond human control — might only emerge after narrow superintelligence is firmly established. But that threshold is not necessary for AI to revolutionize software engineering, or to render large swaths of programming jobs obsolete.

The Automation of Intelligence

The industrial revolution mechanized human labor. The AI revolution is mechanizing human thought. A calculator didn’t make mathematicians obsolete, but it did render mental arithmetic far less valuable. Now, AI coding models are poised to do the same for software engineering. A decade ago, software engineers were confident that coding required too much creativity and abstract reasoning for automation. Today, that belief looks increasingly outdated.

The implications extend beyond software development. If an AI can write code better than any human, it can improve itself — rewriting its own architecture, optimizing software development cycles, and producing innovations at a speed no human team could match. The dream (or nightmare) of recursive self-improvement — where AI enhances its own capabilities beyond human comprehension — begins with surpassing human programmers.

Current AI Limitations

Despite this rapid progress, AI coding models are not without limitations. Today’s models still:

  • Struggle with long-term coherence — While AI can generate brilliant short bursts of code, maintaining structure across an entire large-scale project remains challenging.
  • Make subtle logical errors — AI-generated code can be brittle, sometimes passing tests but failing in unexpected edge cases.
  • Lack true conceptual understanding — AI does not “think” in the way humans do; it predicts outputs based on training data, which can lead to issues in novel problem-solving.
  • Depend on high compute resources — The sheer computational cost of training and running large AI models limits accessibility and efficiency.
  • Face legal and ethical concerns — AI-generated code raises questions about intellectual property, security vulnerabilities, and liability in automated decision-making. However, none of these limitations appear fundamental. As AI coding models improve, these issues may be mitigated through better model architectures, reinforcement learning from human feedback, and more robust verification processes.

What Happens When AI Becomes the Best Coder?

When AI surpasses every human programmer, the software development landscape will undergo a transformation unlike anything seen before. The immediate consequence will be an explosion in productivity. Today, coding is often bottlenecked by human limitations — time, cognitive load, debugging inefficiencies. A superhuman AI coder, however, will be able to write flawless code at a scale and speed no human team could match. The slowest part of software development will no longer be coding itself but rather the ability of humans to articulate what needs to be built. This shift will redefine the role of software engineers, moving them from hands-on coding to high-level problem definition, where their primary job will be describing tasks in natural language and refining AI-generated solutions.

The elevation of software engineering to a high-level conceptual discipline will parallel shifts seen in other fields after technological breakthroughs. Just as mechanical engineers moved from manually crafting machine parts to designing entire automated assembly lines, software engineers will move away from syntax-heavy programming toward a focus on logic, architecture, and oversight. The difference is that while industrial automation still required human operators, AI-driven software development may eventually require far fewer engineers. Rather than a team of programmers working on a new product, a single AI model — guided by a handful of human supervisors — may be able to design, test, and deploy complex systems in a fraction of the time.

These efficiency gains will also bring economic disruption. The demand for traditional software engineers will shrink, with many roles becoming redundant or significantly devalued. While there will still be a need for AI supervisors, ethical auditors, and systems architects, the sheer number of coders required to maintain and expand digital infrastructure will decline. This will likely trigger a reshuffling of the global labor market, forcing software professionals to pivot toward roles that leverage uniquely human skills — such as strategic thinking, interdisciplinary problem-solving, or regulatory oversight. Just as automation displaced factory workers but created new industries, AI-driven coding will eliminate certain programming jobs while opening opportunities in AI alignment, governance, and specialized fields where human creativity is still required.

The Governance Challenge: Can We Keep Up?

As artificial intelligence coding models approach superhuman capabilities, questions surrounding AI governance become unavoidable. The rapid acceleration of AI development poses a fundamental challenge: how do we regulate something that evolves faster than our ability to understand it? Former Vice President Kamala Harris has emphasized the importance of responsible AI governance, warning that “we must consider and address the full spectrum of AI risk — threats to humanity as a whole, as well as threats to individuals, communities, to our institutions, and to our most vulnerable populations.” This perspective underscores the need for proactive regulation, ensuring AI’s immense power is not misused or allowed to spiral out of human control.

However, there are those who see regulation as an impediment to progress. Current Vice President J.D. Vance has taken a starkly different stance, stating, “I’m not here this morning to talk about AI safety, which was the title of the conference a couple of years ago. I’m here to talk about AI opportunity.” His position reflects a growing faction that prioritizes AI’s potential over its risks, advocating for fewer regulatory restrictions to push AI science beyond the limits of current governance structures. In this view, slowing AI’s development in the name of safety is seen as a hindrance to American innovation and global competitiveness.

The tension between these perspectives — AI as a transformative force to be harnessed versus AI as a destabilizing force to be controlled — will define the coming years. If AI coders become capable of self-improvement, the regulatory challenge will not just be about ethical AI use but about maintaining any meaningful oversight at all. While laws and safety guidelines may be drafted, the reality is that AI development will likely continue to outpace regulation, driven by the imperative to innovate. This raises a critical question: Can governance keep up, or will AI’s rapid evolution render human oversight obsolete?

Perhaps most significantly, AI’s ability to improve itself will accelerate progress beyond what any human regulatory framework can control. AI coders will optimize their own development cycles, pushing the boundaries of software innovation at speeds that outpace human decision-making. As these models refine themselves, they will produce new architectures and techniques far beyond current human capabilities. This acceleration raises profound questions about governance, safety, and control. Who ensures that AI-driven coding does not lead to unintended consequences? How do we regulate software that evolves too quickly for human oversight? The very notion of “human-led” software development may become obsolete, forcing society to confront what it means to build technology in an era where humans are no longer the best builders.

Conclusion: You Can’t Outrun the Calculator

Many professionals — coders included — assume that their domain is too complex for automation. But history suggests otherwise. The printing press didn’t end storytelling. The camera didn’t kill painting. The calculator didn’t erase mathematics. They transformed them. Perhaps AI will not replace software engineers, but rather elevate them to something else entirely — something we don’t yet have a name for.

The real challenge isn’t whether AI will surpass human coders. That is all but inevitable. The deeper question is what happens when humans are no longer the ones pushing the boundaries of technological progress. When AI reaches a point where it can autonomously experiment, refine, and generate breakthroughs without human input, we may find ourselves as spectators to progress rather than its architects.

So, if you’re a coder wondering what comes next, the answer is simple: adapt, or be outpaced. Because no matter how fast you are, you can’t outrun the calculator.
